King & Allen celebrate – The Suits of Mad Men

As the TV phenomenon that is Mad Men airs it’s final episode this spring, it seems appropriate that K&A takes a moment to honour the show that has brought us a host of style icons – from the Prince of Wales checked, double breasted Roger Stirling to the royal blue two-pieces of young upstart Pete Campbell, Mad Men inspired a raising of the sartorial bar never seen before by a TV show.

Icon of the Month – Eddie Redmayne

Like previous King & Allen icons Benedict Cumberbach or Idris Elba, Eddie Redmayne is one of those talented young British actors who it’s impossible not to like. He shot to super-stardom in Les Miserables and hasn’t put a foot wrong since, showing his real acting meat playing Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything – for which he won the Oscar this week for best actor. As if the accolades weren’t coming thick and fast enough – he was also recently voted GQ’s best dressed man. From bold checked rakish to slick understated cool, he’s not afraid to vary his wardrobe.

How to wear a power suit like Michael Corleone in The Godfather Pt II

This month “the greatest sequel of all time”, The Godfather Pt II, will be 40 years old. But rather than waxing lyrical on the inevitable release of the digitally enhanced 5.1 commemorative blue ray edition of the cinematic classic, we thought we’d focus on the Michael Corleone’s suits…

Jason Manford’s Guide to Dressing for a Wedding

The History of the Suit Jacket

Practical, comfortable, smart and flattering, no other garment has impacted menswear quite like the humble suit jacket. Overcoat Season is here again

The weather has turned, the nights are drawing in, and October will soon be upon us. It’s time to start thinking about how you’re going to protect yourself (and your suits!) from the elements this winter. Thankfully, overcoats have never come in more styles, cloths and colours than they do today and thanks to a change in overcoat fashion over the last couple of years it is now perfectly acceptable to break away from the classic blues, blacks and greys – even for a business suit.

Icon of the Month – Jude Law

Jude Law first came to the attention of King & Allen in The Talented Mr Ripley – in which his character Dickie Greenleaf wears some of the best ‘Riviera Style’ ever committed to celluloid. Since then he has gone on to play a number of dapper roles including Alfie Elkins (Alfie), Dr. Watson (Sherlock Holmes) and most recently in the title role of Dom Hemingway.

Accessories – the magic number

Pocket squares, tie pins, collar bars, cravats, tie bars… suit accessories have never been more popular. And understandably so: a well-chosen blend of accessories can turn a standard suit into a sartorial masterpiece. But if you take it too far you’re trying too hard and you could ruin all that effort. The crucial thing is to strike a balance, and the magic number to ensure accessorising harmony is, as De La Soul so famously put it, 3. However, this magic number only works if one of your three is your tie or (coloured) socks. If you’re not wearing either of these the number falls to 2.

Myth busting – The truth about the ‘Super’ number

The ‘Super’ rating on cloth refers to the width of the fibre in microns. It is therefore an indicator (but by no means a measure) of quality and performance. The finer the wool is spun the thinner it is in microns and the higher the Super number – indicating that it will feel very soft. However, the high number also indicates that the cloth will be more delicate and therefore require more care be taken when wearing.

Icon of the Month – Idris Elba

Idris Elba deserves Icon status on the strength of this photograph alone. At 6ft, 3” he pulls off this double-breasted suit perfectly, reaffirming what we’ve said many times before in The Stitch – that if you’re tall and well built a double-breasted suit is definitely worth considering.
