The Life and Style of Prince – The Last Dandy Megastar

From the naked androgyny of his eponymous 1979 album, to his emotional last appearance in Atlanta last week, Prince Rogers Nelson set his own path in both style and music. To understand how and why he achieved such a unique journey, it’s important to understand a little about his relationships with two key factors in his life: god and sex.

K&A Suit Photo Competition – we have a winner!

Last month we invited you to send in a photo of you in your K&A suit for a chance to win £700 to spend in store. There were a huge amount of entries, so it was a genuine challenge to shortlist our favourite 6 which were then voted for by the Facebook community. The competition garnered a huge amount of attention, with over 800 votes cast. But in the end, there could only be one winner, with a very impressive 321 votes… Congratulations to Jack Parris – we look forward to making you a new suit!

Icon of the Month – Derek Zoolander

Derek Zoolander: model, actor, philanthropist, but not an ambi-turner. In a lovely case of life imitating art, imitating life, the film’s costume designer, Leesa Evans, has confessed that most of the clothes worn by the film’s protagonists are existing pieces – or adapted from existing pieces – by designers such as Valentino, Kenzo and Yves Saint Laurent. But what about the man himself? It’s difficult to comment on the style of a man who has never dressed himself, but his suits certainly are… eclectic. Often in The Stitch we like to offer advice for the King & Allen suit wearer on what we can learn from our chosen Icon. This month’s takeaway should probably be: don’t let anyone else dress you!

Icon of the Month – David Bowie

David Bowie was the first person ever to be Icon of the Month (October 2010) which is testament to how highly his style is regarded by the King & Allen team. We would never usually repeat an Icon, but we felt it was fitting to pay our respects to a man who made such a positive impact on our industry.

Style Predictions 2016. Part 1

Now in its 5th year, the King & Allen style predictions have become as much of a January fixture as failed diets and feigned sobriety. Sometimes we get it right (we predicted waistcoats and slimmer trousers back in 2009), and sometimes we get it horribly wrong (2015’s floral explosion never quite happened!), but either way it’s always worth having a think about what the menswear world might be doing before you make your first suit purchase of the year…

Icon of the Month – Brad Pitt

This month sees the release of By the Sea, the first film Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have starred in together since they met on the set of Mr & Mrs Smith – 10 years ago. Reactions to the film have swayed from one pole to the other, but what is in no doubt is that in the last 10 years the pair have transcended from attractive movie stars to cultural icons. From his cameo in True Romance, through the Oceans trilogy and up to and including Fury, Pitt has maintained a flawless image – the human personification of ‘effortlessly cool’.

The History of the Cufflink

Although historians have observed the presence of cufflinks in ancient Egyptian paintings, the cufflink as we know it dates back to the 17th century, before which time sleeves were buttoned or tied at the wrist in bows. When they first emerged they were exclusively worn by the aristocracy and were predominantly made from gold and adorned by gem stones. Interestingly, they were often gifted – just as they are today.

Why were Daniel Craig’s suits so ill-fitting in Spectre?

King & Allen was founded in 2003, and Casino Royale was released in 2006. Naturally, we have followed Daniel Craig’s sartorial journey with great interest and have loved almost all the suits he has worn. The suits in Spectre, however, were a great disappointment.

“No Mr Bond, I expect you to die!” – analysing the relationship between Daniel Craig’s hair colour and the suits he wears as Bond

In his private life Craig rarely wears a suit, preferring smart, fitted casualwear. That is not to say, however, that he doesn’t wear suits extremely often: he’s had enough red carpet strolls and Bond junkets to last a lifetime, which is probably why it looks like he’ll be hanging up his Walther PPK after Spectre.

Why should you invest in 2nd trousers

Before we start this list, it’s important to bear in mind that a well-kept jacket can last a lifetime. For trousers this is much more of a challenge. There are three reasons why it’s highly recommended that you invest in a second pair of trousers for your suit:

Famous Dandies Through the Ages

This month at King & Allen we’re focusing on ‘Dandyism’ – specifically on how the etymology of the word has dramatically changed over the centuries. From the relatively conservative (but painstakingly attentive) understated elegance of Beau Brummell to the modern day peacock Andre 3000, we take a look at our favourite Dandies from across the ages:
