How Alterations Can Transform Your Old Suits

Do you have an old suit at the back of your wardrobe that you no longer wear? It might be one that you’ve bought off-the-peg or even an old bespoke suit.

Most of the time, we stop wearing these suits because they no longer fit how we want them to or the cut just doesn’t feel modern anymore. Thankfully, these problems can be significantly improved with alterations.

The Benefits of Suit Alterations

We’re sure you all know by now that if you want your suit to fit properly, suit alterations are non-negotiable. That might mean going bespoke or having an off-the-peg suit tailored afterwards.

Suit alterations are also extremely helpful when you’ve lost or gained a little weight. Most good quality suits have some allowance left in the seams so that they can be let out if they’re feeling too tight. They can also be taken in if you have lost weight. What was once an unwearable suit can be transformed into something that fits and is comfortable enough to wear on a regular basis again.

In the case of suits that feel a little dated, some tailoring can go a long way. Older suits tend to be cut with more over-body allowance, which means that they are baggier than most suits worn today. Bringing in the waist of the jacket and tapering the trousers can work wonders for making the suit feel contemporary again.

Transform your Old Suits with Alterations

To show you just how transformative alterations can be, our founder, Jake Allen, has dug out an old pair of trousers from the back of his wardrobe. With two simple alterations, an ill-fitting, outdated pair of trousers look as good as new (if not better!)

Before Alterations

These trousers are over 10 years old. They were designed to be worn high on the waist and have a classic width.

These days, Jake prefers to wear his trousers a little lower on his waist, which means that the trousers now appear too long. The width of the trouser leg is much wider than Jake usually wears, and overall, they look quite dated.

Altering the Trousers

Because Jake is wearing the trousers a little lower than he used to, there is an excess of material at the back of the seat and thigh. Measun, our Surbiton-based tailor, is resolving this issue by tapering the trouser all the way down the leg.

Whenever you taper a trouser towards the hem, you often need to shorten it too as the trouser will sit higher on your shoe. This is even more necessary for Jake, whose trousers are looking too long in the first place, so Measun is shortening them too.

After Alterations

It’s amazing how a couple of simple alterations can make a garment look as good as new again! The trousers have a streamlined, contemporary silhouette that is much more flattering on Jake’s slim frame. The trousers now have a small break at the front of the shoe, which means that they aren’t folding and rippling untidily. The overall silhouette looks a lot more modern, meaning that Jake can start wearing them again. Success!

Hype For Pinstripe

The term ‘pinstripe’ refers to the very thin, parallel lines that run through a cloth, contrasting with the main colour. Taken at face value, it would seem to be a fairly bland description of a simple fabric pattern. But the history of the pinstripe suit is anything from bland and, indeed, the suit itself has a host of connotations attached to it.
