Tuxedos - Top Wedding Trend for 2024

For those who want to feel like 007 at their wedding, the tuxedo (aka dinner suit) has become a popular choice of attire for the big day. Thanks to the likes of Pinterest and TikTok, black and white tie weddings have started to trickle into the wedding scene increasingly since the pandemic.

So with formalwear labelled as a top wedding trend for 2024, we thought we would explore the new ways that the dinner suit is showing off individuality and sophistication…

A Brief History

The Dinner suit dates back to the late 1800s, with Prince Edward VII wanting a suit that was more formal than a lounge suit but without the eccentricity of a tailcoat. It was a balance between formalwear and loungewear that could be worn between settings without feeling out of place. Dinner suits started trickling into America, and by the 1900s the dinner jacket (known in America as the ‘Tuxedo’) was acceptable at most formal events.

Dipping in and out of popularity throughout the 20th century, the dinner suit has now surged back into popularity thanks to pop culture references and top celebrity events. There are now new takes on the black-tie look, taking influences from the traditional styles and blending them with new contemporary colours and silhouettes.

Style Tips for Your Tuxedo

It doesn’t have to be black

Try a colour that best suits you, rather than automatically opting for the traditional black. Midnight blue is popular for those wanting a slightly softer shade, but you can go for any colour or pattern that fits your style. Whether it’s bright and bold or simple and elegant, the choice is yours.

Velvet is always a Winner

With bolder colours and fabrics becoming more popular, individuals are now blending this into their formalwear, particularly with the retro velvet tuxedo that first took the world by storm in the 1970s. You can opt for brighter velvet colours to make a statement on the big day, or black if you want to keep the dinner jacket more traditional.

Peak Lapels are statement

Dinner jackets traditionally have a shawl lapel, which is a simple design that has no notches and runs as a band around the back of the neck. There is now more experimentation with more statement lapels, namely the peak lapel. With this lapel you can change the size (doesn’t have to be big) and even split the materials to emphasise the peak.

Cropped Style is In

This style is very much in fashion and is typically used with more feminine fits. Opting for a cropped style is dependent on your body proportions as it drapes differently to a normal length jacket. K&A client and Singer-Songerwriter Lucy Spraggan is a huge fan of cropped jackets!

Print your own Design

With the development of more advanced fabric-printing techniques, tailoring is now open to whatever your imagination can dream up! As well as being able to print bespoke linings, we also now have the ability to print personalised designs on the outer fabric. If you don’t have a design in mind, we have a huge selection of K&A designs to choose from.
