How to style down when off the clock

With dress codes blurring more and more, suits no longer just mean business. It’s becoming increasingly popular to add a casual spin on workwear to make your 9-5 pieces hit their targets at the weekend too. Here are a few tips on how to easily take your suit from work to the weekend.

Split the Pieces

It’s difficult to style down if you’re wearing a full 3-piece suit. Try splitting the garments and pair them with more casual types of clothing. The key to this is keeping it simple… forget you’re in a suit and pretend you’re in a tracksuit instead. Try matching your blazer with an open collar shirt and chinos to get the smart-casual look. In colder months, you can overlay a hoodie or roll neck jumper underneath your jacket.

Alternatively, ditch the blazer and pair your trousers with a simple base layer t-shirt for a juxtaposed look that’s relaxed yet stylish. Aim for basic t-shirt styles and block colours to get a relaxed, deconstructed look that doesn’t over-complicate and clash. If you're looking for an extra statement piece - overlay your matching waistcoat.

Switch the Shoes

Swapping your smarter shoes for a more casual pair will make you look less formal and feel far more comfortable. White trainers are booming currently, seemingly creating a whole ‘active workwear’ category of their own. Try going for a trainer that's low top with one or two colours, aiming for a minimalist style that's toned down and refined. This could be a plimsoll style trainer, leather or something with a slimmer sole to add style to your casual look whilst making sure they still blend with your smarter attire.

Looking for something a little more formal than trainers - try moccasins or boots. Ideally wear moccasins without socks to keep the casual look.

Accessorise!

Accessories are a game changer when it comes to creating a more casual look with your suit. Lose the formal frills (tie and pocket square etc.) and substitute in a piece of jewellery that compliments your outfit. A watch, necklace, rings, hat or pair of sunglasses can add effortless style to your off-duty look.

So next time you’re buying a new suit for work, consider styles that give you the flex to wear at work and on the weekend. It will change the way you approach your wardrobe and inject creativity into your business attire. We’re here to help build your vision and transform it into a garment that you will be proud of.
