Trends: The Rise of Oversized Clothing

Oversized, relaxed, but fitted to suit you - this style is here to stay. Gone are the days when traditional fitted cuts of jackets dominated the tailoring industry. The past-favoured, shape-defining jacket typical of formal menswear is being modernised into unisex silhouettes that encourage individual expression, with oversized or lightly roomy jackets being a popular choice.

‘Tailored’ doesn’t necessarily mean figuring-hugging. It means creating a garment to the style and fit YOU want

Tailoring Turned Casual?

Oversized Jackets have been on the rise for a few years now, with luxury designers putting bolder and boxier silhouettes onto the runway. The craze of ‘sustainable and slouchy’, labelled by Vogue, arose from Spring Summer Men’s 2025 Fashion Week in June. Designers like Paul Smith set the scene with double-breasted relaxed looks, while other brands used eco-friendly materials for their contemporary tailoring. Just as any retailer aims to recreate runways, luxury designers are shaping the market, and there has been a rise in relaxed looks on the streets of London. A new spin on smart casual, where high-quality tailored jackets seem to be effortlessly paired with jeans or styled for a more informal vibe.

What is an Oversized jacket?

An oversized jacket is essentially anything of personal taste that doesn't hug the curves and figure of the body. As well as choosing it for style, the looser fit of oversized jackets can be more comfortable to wear and also gives more versatility to pair it with a jumper or a thicker garment for the colder months.

The key to creating the perfect oversized jacket is to align the portions of the jacket; this is a design factor commonly overlooked in off-the-peg styles. It is fundamental to match the grading to the proportions, adding extra width on the shoulders means adding extra length on the sleeves and extending the body of the jacket, accompanied by widening the chest and waist - no room for misaligned measurements.

You can choose to add extra padding to the shoulder pads to achieve a boxy silhouette that’s both structured and casual. Pair this with straight pockets to maintain a symmetrical look.

Sculpted to Individual Style...

Forget fitting the mould, tailoring is about making the jacket your statement. Your initial consultation isn’t just about finding the right fit for your body, it’s about crafting a look you love. Oversized fits are your fashion playground.

Stuck on Fabrics?

For a wedding-ready oversized tailored jacket with a luxurious drape, consider the Royal Mile 1976 plains in Super 140’s Merino Wool Serge. This finer material offers an exquisite, flowing silhouette that adds an extra touch of elegance to any ensemble.

For an oversized jacket that seamlessly transitions from formal to casual, especially when paired with jeans, consider Airesco in Ply Wool Worsted Suitings. This heavier, open-weave fabric provides a structured, sculpted look that adds versatility and sharpness to your wardrobe.
