The Double-Breasted Jacket - Back and Booming in 2024

The double-breasted jacket is back. With the likes of Gucci, Ralph Lauren and Tom Ford leading the comeback, the once deemed formal style is taking centre stage for 2024 with new cuts and contemporary styles bringing it into modern day tailoring.

From Aristocracy to Hollywood

Popularised in the late 19th century, the double-breasted jacket was originally made for British Aristocracy, rising in popularity in the 1920s and 1930s after becoming the Prince of Wales’ jacket of choice. This led to the style correlating with formal attire, becoming a favourite within vintage Hollywood fashion, with big stars of the time constantly seen sporting the style.

What makes a double-breasted jacket?

Generally, the double-breasted jacket consists of peak lapels and either 2, 4, or 6 buttons. The layout of the buttons can vary depending on the break-point of your lapels (where the lapels cross over the body), this can be higher or lower and is entirely based on preference and body shape.

Styling Tips

Formal Head-turner

The double-breasted style tends to be linked to formal attire, making it a perfect fit for weddings. Consider a structured, well-tailored, double-breasted jacket for a slick silhouette guaranteed to turn heads. Why not pair a double-breasted waistcoat with a jacket to show off the style's formal heritage with contemporary spin.

Going Casual

If you’re wanting a casual look, try the looser fit and deconstructed style inspired by Gucci, typically worn with a T-shirt; this is a great look and definitely on-trend for 2024. With a more relaxed silhouette, it’s perfect if you’re looking to wear the jacket day to day.

The Summer look

If you fancy something different to the traditional style in the summer months, why not simply go for a double-breasted waistcoat. This is a modern approach to the style and is a slightly more relaxed way of showing contemporary tailoring for both casual and business attire.
