Icon of the Month: The Sartorial Elegance of Jean Cocteau

Cutting a dandy-like figure in bohemian Paris, Jean Cocteau was a French artist, poet, writer and filmmaker, most well known for his novel, ‘Les Enfants Terribles,’ and his film, ‘La Belle et La Bete.’ He would most often be found socialising with the avant-garde crowd, counting Marcel Proust, Pablo Picasso and Edith Piaf as friends of his.

Icon of the Month – Daniel Radcliffe

While so many other child stars have gone off the rails or disappeared into obscurity, Daniel Radcliffe has managed to steer the post-Potter course exceptionally well, choosing very different roles and therefore avoiding the inevitable pigeon-holing. His style is very much a reflection of this desire to show his breadth of character. He’s prepared to take a risk and show some range, from conservative blues and greys to bolder checks and accessories.

Icon of the Month – Tom Hiddleston

You have to feel sorry for Tom Hiddleston. Just as his rumoured romance with pop royalty Taylor Swift hits the tabloids, the global political stage implodes and no one pays a blind bit of notice. Still, we’ve all had a difficult month…

Icon of the Month – Paul Weller

For over 40 years, Paul Weller has encapsulated the marriage between style and music. Having formed two of the most influential bands of their respective eras – The Jam (1976-1982) and The Style Council (1983-1989), he went out on his own and last year released his 12th solo album.

Icon of the Month – Derek Zoolander

Derek Zoolander: model, actor, philanthropist, but not an ambi-turner. In a lovely case of life imitating art, imitating life, the film’s costume designer, Leesa Evans, has confessed that most of the clothes worn by the film’s protagonists are existing pieces – or adapted from existing pieces – by designers such as Valentino, Kenzo and Yves Saint Laurent. But what about the man himself? It’s difficult to comment on the style of a man who has never dressed himself, but his suits certainly are… eclectic. Often in The Stitch we like to offer advice for the King & Allen suit wearer on what we can learn from our chosen Icon. This month’s takeaway should probably be: don’t let anyone else dress you!

Icon of the Month – David Bowie

David Bowie was the first person ever to be Icon of the Month (October 2010) which is testament to how highly his style is regarded by the King & Allen team. Icon of the Month – Brad Pitt

This month sees the release of By the Sea, the first film Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have starred in together since they met on the set of Mr & Mrs Smith – 10 years ago. Reactions to the film have swayed from one pole to the other, but what is in no doubt is that in the last 10 years the pair have transcended from attractive movie stars to cultural icons. From his cameo in True Romance, through the Oceans trilogy and up to and including Fury, Pitt has maintained a flawless image – the human personification of ‘effortlessly cool’.

Why were Daniel Craig’s suits so ill-fitting in Spectre?

King & Allen was founded in 2003, and Casino Royale was released in 2006. Naturally, we have followed Daniel Craig’s sartorial journey with great interest and have loved almost all the suits he has worn. The suits in Spectre, however, were a great disappointment.

“No Mr Bond, I expect you to die!” – analysing the relationship between Daniel Craig’s hair colour and the suits he wears as Bond

In his private life Craig rarely wears a suit, preferring smart, fitted casualwear. That is not to say, however, that he doesn’t wear suits extremely often: he’s had enough red carpet strolls and Bond junkets to last a lifetime, which is probably why it looks like he’ll be hanging up his Walther PPK after Spectre.

Famous Dandies Through the Ages

This month at King & Allen we’re focusing on ‘Dandyism’ – specifically on how the etymology of the word has dramatically changed over the centuries. From the relatively conservative (but painstakingly attentive) understated elegance of Beau Brummell to the modern day peacock Andre 3000, we take a look at our favourite Dandies from across the ages:

What is the true definition of a Dandy?

From its origins in early 19c regency England to present day pop stars like Kanye West, the word ‘dandy’ has been bandied around with equal parts respect and derision. However, fashion historians would argue that much of the negativity stems from ignorance of the true meaning of what it is to be ‘dandy’: “Contrary to what many thoughtless people seem to believe, dandyism is not even an excessive delight in clothes and material elegance. For the perfect dandy, these things are no more than the symbol of the aristocratic superiority of mind.” Charles Baudelaire.
